Zion Missionaries Kristopher and Rebecca HartwigZion members support the Hartwig's, ELCA missionaries serving in Tanzania as they work to find the money to staff the Bulongwa hospital in Tanzania. During April, May, and June each year, Zion members focus their Social Ministry emphasis on the work of our missionaries. Zion has made a yearly financial commitment to support them and their work. Kristopher and Rebecca Hartwig visited Zion on Wednesday, August 6th. They shared with us their ongoing challenges to fund the staffing of the Bulongwa hospital and their work with Aids patients. The Hartwig's, their family and the work God has called them to do are kept in weekly prayer of the congregation. Return to top of pageWe Filled Another Ark!Congratulations!! Social Ministry would like to announce that we did fill another ark for the fifth year in a row (2007)! This year we did a puppet campaign. Each week a different puppet representing an animal from Heifer did a children's sermon with Pastor and Peli (Peli is Pastor's Pelican puppet.) This was a great way to educate young and old alike about the variety of animals that Heifer uses. It also illustrated the different ways each animal contributes to a family in need. The campaign was very successful and marked the first year the entire sum of $5000 (one Ark) was filled by Zion's contributions alone in the span of the one year!!! Much thanks to our two matching angel donors for their generosity. What an outstanding way to demonstrate sharing and caring!! May we all thank God for the gift of giving!! Return to top of pageWhat is Heifer Project Project International? In 1944, Dan West founded HPI, Heifer Project International. He was an Indiana farmer who wanted to help hungry children. He wanted to ensure that hungry families have adequate food and income, so he came up with the idea of multiplication. Families are given a gift of an animal offspring and are taught how to raise it to provide food for their own family and to produce offspring and in turn they must pass on a gift of an offspring to another family in need. As stated in a flyer from HPI, "...is about new beginnings: children grow healthy and receive education, families and communities become strong, and the environment grows richer for future generations." The Bible calls us to help those who are hungry. HPI is a way to change lives forever. "The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it." Psalm 24:1 What your gifts will provide:
How your gifts will help:

Return to top of pageHeifer Project RapOn Sunday, June 9, 2002, Nancy Grove and Tyler Holmberg performed a rap that was written by Nancy. With their permission we have put in the words to the rap, titled: Heifer Project International Let me tell you a bit what Heifer's all about. They face the problem of hunger, a huge problem no doubt. Its truly hard to fathom and it breaks my heart to say, That 20,000* people 'round the world die of hunger every day. So you're asking yourself now "Are solutions attainable?" Heifer Projects' found the key, making families sustainable. 'Cuz you see they understand you can't just give people some fish That will not feed them tomorrow, but will only fill their daily dish. If you give people some fish they'll eat only for a day, But if you teach people to fish they'll eat now and always. But now the question is: How to fulfill this task? All my brothers and my sisters, that's the question you must ask. So here's a bit about Heifer philosophy They fight the problem of hunger family by family. Heifer gives livestock, like chickens and cow, Llamas, goats, rabbits, bees, sheep and water buffalo. So for example lets say they give a family a cow, That doesn't mean they chop it up and eat it right now. No! They milk the cow and have it plow and here's the reason why, Because in a couple of months, that heifer's gonna multiply. And drinking milk every day, kids grow strong which in cool. Selling milk for extra cash, now the kids can go to school. Yeah, they sell the honey, milk and eggs, you see, they make a living They they pass the offspring on, it's the gift that keeps on giving. In the battle versus hunger, this is not the only way to fight. Heifer sets up women's groups to promote women's rights. And because they're always in the future trying to see, They teach the people with the earth to live in healthy harmony. Heifer's changing this world one family at a time, That's why your money really helps, every dollar, every dime. That's why your money really helps, every dollar, every dime.
